ABOUT THE WINE
A fairly common dry spring in McLaren Vale made for low disease risk and the growing season got off to a great start. As with each vintage there are challenges, which gives each vintage individuality. Some heat in January and significant rains in February tested our vineyard management plans but relief in the very important last 10 days of ripening with mild to warm conditions and cool nights for natural acidity saw this Shiraz harvested in the third week of March.
Last years was a sell out and extremely good, but it just got better! This wine comes from a combination our 80 year old gnarly Shiraz and our World-class Squid Ink vineyard. Crops are kept at less than 2 Tonne to the acre to ensure magnificent quality apparent in the great concentration and depth of flavour in this wine. With the complexity of oak tannins from the combined use of French and American hogsheads, this wine is aged for 26 months in oak. Ripe dark berry fruits fill the glass with some cedar and subtle vanilla oak characters. On the palate the wine has a real upfront fruit character, earthy complexity from the vine age with some lovely firm tannins and a hint of that classic spice McLaren Vale Shiraz is known for.
